The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; 3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; 4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; 5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; 7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; 8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; 9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; 10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; 11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: 12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; 13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; 14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; 15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; 16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Deena E = "Jesus' Genealogy (also in Luke 3:23-38--extended back to Adam and God)The first 10 times I tried to read this section of Matthew, I honestly found it to be extremely boring. For 1, I couldn't pronounce most of the names and 2, I couldn't relate to the history of any of these people. So I'm dedicated to explaining each of these people so others who've had the same struggle with this can put the pieces together. (To view my explanations on this, just highlight any name within the genealogy)."

Deena E = "Jacob, The One Who Contended with God & Father of the 12 Tribes of IsraelThe younger twin of Isaac, who was less favored than his brother Esau, tricked his brother into giving up his birthright (Genesis 25:26-34), beguiled his father and thus received Abraham"s covenant promise of God (Genesis 27:1-40)."
Deena E = "Judah [Jesus is also referred to as the Lion of Judah--Rev. 5:5.]Judah, whose name means praise, was the 4th son of Jacob's 1st wife Leah, Rachel's older sister. Jacob married the two sisters--he loved Rachel, but Leah was unloved (Genesis 29:30-35). "
Deena E = "Perez, Son of TamarTamar originally married Judah's first born, Er a wicked man in the Lord's sight; but Er died without any sons/heirs. In situations like these for the 1st born, the primary custom back then was for the closest relative (next brother in line) to redeem his brother's lineage by marrying his brother's widow so he would have heirs to preserve their father's name. Judah had a total of 4 sons. The 2nd born and 3rd (also evil in God's sight) bore Tamar no children and, so Judah promised Tamar the 4th once he was of age to marry. Judah failed to keep his promise so Tamar beguiled him into impregnating her. She bore twins, and Perez was the 1st who broke out, which is the literal meaning of his name. (see full story in Genesis 38:6-30)"

Deena E = "Aram, also called Ram Not much is mentioned of Ram, but he was the 2nd born and middle child of Hezron's three sons. Ram is referenced in 1 Chronicles 2:9 as well as Ruth 4:19"
Deena E = "Amminadab is the only son mentioned of Ram, perhaps the only child (1 Chronicles 2:10). Amminadab was the father-in-law of Aaron, the brother of Moses (Exodus 6:23)."
Deena E = "Naasson or NahshonAlso called the Prince of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:10), Nahshon was Aaron's brother-in-law and the leader of the Tribe of Judah when the children of Israel wandered in the desert (Numbers 7:12-17). Nahshon was the first to bring offerings to the tabernacle and was assigned the first to raise the Lord's standard when they would go to war (Numbers 10:14)."
Deena E = "SalmonSalmon is the only offspring  of Nahshon mentioned (see 1 Chronicles 2:11 & Ruth 4:21). Although it's most likely, the Bible doesn't expressly say whether or not Salmon married Rahab (the harlot, see Joshua 6:17-26), but they were both the parents of Boaz."

Deena E = "Boaz The wealthy, man of integrity and close relative of Naomi's late-husband Elimelech, Boaz, redeemed his widowed daughter-in-law, Ruth. Ruth was a Moabite who decided to stick with Naomi and care for her like her own daughter after she, her sister-in-law Orpah and Naomi had all lost their husbands (Ruth 1:16-18). There was one closer relative to Elimelech to redeem Ruth, but Boaz was committed to marrying her (Ruth 2-4). He was the only son [mentioned] of Salmon (1 Chronicles 2:11)."
Deena E = "ObedNot a whole lot is mentioned of Obed, but we do know that he was the only son of Boaz and Ruth (see 1 Chronicles 2:12 & Ruth 4:21)."
Deena E = "JesseJesse was the only one of Obed's offspring mentioned (Ruth 4:22, 1-Chronicles 2:12). As we read in 1 Samuel, Jesse was a sheep herder who lived in Bethlehem during the days of King Saul's reign. His sons were all mighty warriors and Samuel the priest and prophet, was sent by God to go to his household and anoint the new king of Israel. Jesse's most highlighted moment is when he lined up all of David's 6 older brothers before him, concealing him from being anointed as king (1 Samuel 16:1-12); in other words he relied upon his own understanding which hindered him from seeing his youngest son's calling. 22 Yaakov ben Chaim Tzvi = "In the book of Matthew, the writer is attempting to establish the link between Jesus and King David however, when creating the genealogy of Jesus (which is inconsistent with the other lineage in the New Testament) the author unknowingly links Jesus to a descendant of the cursed King Jeconiah who was promised never to have an heir sit on the throne of David. Jeremiah 22:28-30 - Is this man Jeconiah a despised, broken pot, an object no one wants? Why will he and his children be hurled out, cast into a land they do not know? O land, land, land, hear the word of the Lord!  This is what the Lord says: “Record this man as if childless, a man who will not prosper in his lifetime, for none of his offspring will prosper, none will sit on the throne of David or rule anymore in Judah.”In an attempt to rectify this obvious contradiction in the New Testament, missionaries claim Jesus' lineage through Mary however since lineage never passes through the mother and Mary was not from the line of Solomon, Jesus is automatically invalidated as heir to the throne.I am certain that apologists will post dozens of refutations to claim otherwise, however anyone with eyes and their own mind can "see" that God cursed Jeconiah and since Jesus is claimed to be from Jeconiah, he could never rule over Judah. This is clear as day and needs no long refutation to "explain"."
Sarah R = "Perhaps a "refutation" is in order, if nothing else to show people that Christians can hold confidence in this verse and in Jesus. Many people actually think the curse of Jechonias was reversed (http://www.jewsforjesus.org/answers/prophecy/jeconiah), but, even if not, here's this:"Notice that Luke starts with Mary and goes backwards to Adam. Matthew starts with Abraham and goes forward to Joseph. The intents of the genealogies were obviously different which is clearly seen in their styles. Luke was not written to the Jews, Matthew was. Therefore, Matthew would carry the legal line (from Abraham through David) and Luke the biological one (from Adam through David)..."Finally, in the Joseph genealogy is a man named Jeconiah. God cursed Jeconiah (also called Coniah), stating that no descendant of his would ever sit on the throne of David, "For no man of his descendants will prosper sitting on the throne of David or ruling again in Judah," (Jer. 22:30). But Jesus, of course, will sit on the throne in the heavenly kingdom. The point is that Jesus is not a biological descendant of Jeconiah but through the other lineage--that of Mary. Hence, the prophetic curse upon Jeconiah stands inviolate. But, the legal adoption of Jesus by Joseph reckoned the legal rights of Joseph to Jesus as a son--not the biological curse. This is why we need two genealogies: one of Mary (the actually biological line according to prophecy), and the legal line through Joseph."Quoted from: https://carm.org/bible-difficulties/matthew-mark/why-are-there-different-genealogies-jesus-matthew-1-and-luke-3"

Sara Di Diego = "One can see that Joseph's role as being Jesus' foster dad was very important to Jesus' story and makeup, although he was not involved in making Jesus.  We can see how much more important the family trees of male is than a female.  In Matthew 1, Joseph's family line was described in great detail.  There was no mention of the wives of each man, except for Ruth, and Mary's family line is never mentioned.  One can see how misogynistic the Bible is, on the fact that God did not decide to choose a woman from David's line instead to both conceive and prove a royal lineage for Jesus."
Cary W = "Not only is God with us in Spirit, but He took on human form and literally dwelled among us, as one of us.  This is too profound to really grasp, the the Lord of all creation, is also a man, and that in Him, we participate in His rule, power, glory and kingdom!"
