1 Sarah R = "It is interesting that while this is a fairly common image of Mother Mary and Jesus, there is no Biblical evidence that Mary held Jesus after He died. The Bible says that a group of women, herself included, followed as Jesus' body was taken to a tomb and buried, but not that she herself held Him. To touch a dead body in Judaism makes one unclean, which also makes it unlikely that this actually happened. The image is symbolic then rather than historical."
