Jeff Smith = "This is the Upper Basilica of the Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Work on this site was begun after the canonization of Francis by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. The site used to be known as the "Hill of Hell", where criminals were executed. The Upper Basilica was built between 1239 and 1253 and consecrated by Pope Innocent IV in 1253.In 1818, the remains of St. Francis were found beneath the floor of the Lower Basilica and a crypt was then built to house the remains and enable people to visit. The Upper Basilica was damaged in earthquakes in 1997, which also ruined some frescoes by Giotto. It took two years to complete the restoration."

Jeff Smith = ""Dream of Innocent III", a fresco by Giotto in the Upper Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. In the story of St. Francis, he ventured to see Pope Innocent III to have his little band of brothers recognized and differentiated from the crazies one might encounter at the time. The pope had a dream in which Francis was holding up the church. This convinced the pope that Francis was a real benefit to the church and he gave his blessing to Francis and his order."

Jeff Smith = ""Miracle of the Crucifix", painting by Giotto in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis, in Assisi, Italy. After abandoning his dream of being a knight, Francis one day visited the nearby dilapidated church of San Damiano. Engrossed in prayer, the voice of Jesus, coming from the crucifix spoke to Francis saying, “Francis, go and repair my house, which, as you see, is falling completely into ruin.”"
Jeff Smith = ""Dream of the Palace" by Giotto in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis, Assisi. In the dream, God revealed to Francis a palace filled with weapons branded with crosses. God explained that the palace would be for him and his knights. Francis awoke in the morning and assumed that the dream was a sign of future greatness for him. He joined a military unit in hopes of achieving knighthood as a way to help fulfill the dream. He did not realize God meant that he would be more of a spiritual knight."

Jeff Smith = "This bronze sculpture outside the Basilica of Saint Francis is entitled "Il Ritorno di Franceso" but is also known as "Pilgrim of Peace". In his early years, Francis had wanted to be a knight. He had at least one military adventure, during which he was captured (or surrendered) and was imprisoned in Perugia for about a year until a ransom was paid for his release. In a second adventure, Francis wanted to join the Count of Brienne in his war against the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II. En route to Apulia, however, Francis, had a dream in which a voice, the voice of God, urged him to turn back to Assisi. In the statue, Francis' head hangs down, perhaps due in part to confusion over what his purpose in life was to be if not a knight and perhaps in part due to anticipation of embarrassment for so quickly giving up on his quest after spending his father's money on fancy armor and horse. There are many versions of the story available in print and online. The statue was created by Italian painter and sculptor Luigi Proietti, who was more commonly known as Norberto. Proietti's work was considered "naive art" and his paintings often featured industrious Franciscan monks in Umbrian landscapes. See some of his works at the Norberto Museum in Spello, Italy, his place of birth."
