about David Zuniga PhD MDIV MA
clergy

Prior to earning his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and starting his current private practice, Dr. Zuniga earned his Master of Divinity degree from Harvard, which led to him becoming the first westerner to be ordained in the Taego Order (one of the two largest and oldest lineages of Zen/Son Buddhism in South Korea), and the third Buddhist to become a licensed hospital/hospice chaplain in the United States. He also holds a Masters degree in literature. In his previous career, Dr. Zuniga worked as an administrator and also as a Zen/interfaith chaplain in both pediatric and adult end-of-life care. His hospice work included designing and leading an award winning grassroots community educational program about end-of-life issues. As a hospital chaplain he led a palliative care program for end-stage oncology patients. As a licensed psychologist, some of his clinical interests include mindfulness and spiritually integrative counseling. He has published widely and spoken internationally at leading academic conferences on mindfulness and healthcare-related concerns. Dr. Zuniga’s dharma name is Daeil Sunim; Daeil is Korean for Vairocana which means “the Buddha of the Sun,” and Sunim is the traditional Korean term for ordained Buddhist clergy. He received both his sramana and bhikkhu ordinations in Sonamsa Temple (built in 529 C.E.) of Chogye Mountain in the South Cholla province in Sunchun, South Korea. You can learn more about Dr. Zuniga’s work at www.drdavidzuniga.com.
