A Dishonest Review About Islam

Whoever selects and assigns the books on Islam for the Sunday New York Times Book Review needs to widen his reading and add some new names to his rolodex.

Last week there was a rave review of Bruce Bawer’s alarmist book Surrender (the subtitle says it all: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom).

This week, the cover of the Book Review has a picture of a group of fully covered Muslim women set against a crowd of ‘normal-looking’ mostly-white Europeans with the headline “Strangers in the Land”.

The review betrays more about the opinions of the reviewer – the noted and controversial academic Fouad Ajami – than the book under consideration, Christopher Caldwell’s Reflections on the Revolution in Europe.

Ajami opens his piece by juxtaposing two disparate pieces of history: the departure of Spain’s last Muslim ruler in 1492, and the terrorist attacks on Madrid in 2004. “A circle was closed,” Ajami writes, “and Islam was, once again, a matter of Western Europe.”

The Muslim presence in medieval Spain is widely regarded as a time of tolerance, good government and support for the arts and education. In fact, Ajami himself wrote a positive review of one of the many books on that era, Maria Rosa Menocal’s The Ornament of the World. Placing Al-Andalus, as it was known, in the same breath as a ghastly terrorist attack – as if to say ‘Here’s what happens when Muslims are around’ – is beyond questionable. A dead fish wouldn’t want to be wrapped in a newspaper article with that level of intellectual dishonesty.

I am with Ajami when he goes after the “militants, freeloaders and opportunists” discussed in Caldwell’s book – the imams who criticize Western culture while living off the European welfare state, the Muslim men who refuse to educate their daughters and practically lock their wives in the kitchen, the Muslim youth who threaten the societies they should be seeking to contribute to. But, having lived there for three years, I know this is far from a full description of Muslims in Europe. In fact, Ajami’s obsession with such characters (undoubtedly real, but how representative?) again reveals something about himself.

He refers to Europe’s Muslims as “guests” (quotation marks his), and says that they have overstayed their welcome. And then, in a peculiar turn, he tells the story of his own immigration to America. Why is he not a guest who has overstayed his welcome? Ahhh, because as he says, “I, and others like me, accepted the rupture in our lives … I accepted the ‘differentness’ of the new country … I needed no tales of the old country.”

Is this America he is talking about? This country that was build on immigrants coming and bringing the best of their heritage – arts, cuisine, work ethic, commitment to education, and yes, religious tradition. I mean, where would we be without Catholic universities or Jewish philanthropy? Does Ajami really think nations are build by immigrants leaving their heritage at home?

Ajami, of all people, should know better. It’s not like he became an engineer or a doctor. He is an immigrant from an Arab country who has made his career as an expert on the Middle East. Of course he brought parts of it with him.

As I came to the end of the review, I found myself wondering whether Ajami was simply in a foul mood when he wrote this. An academic of his stature certainly understands that the 21st Century is going to be in large part about how relatively homogenous ‘host societies’ integrate immigrant communities. As Michael Walzer once wrote: the challenge of the diverse society is to embrace its differences and maintain a common life.

That suggests responsibilities on the part of the indigenous population (who, after all, needs the labor of the newcomers) and the immigrant community. Both need to embrace and maintain. Both the common life and the differences are important. The hope is that the differences contribute to the common life – strengthening and expanding it.

Islam has much to contribute to the West. Some loud and boorish Muslims in Europe claim Islam can only dominate. And, yes, a few of them are dangerous to Europe – including the Muslims of Europe. Some Westerners are responding by viewing Muslims as perpetual guests – migrant, temporary, throwaway labor – not neighbors and citizens. It’s a framing that helps neither the old Europeans nor the new ones.

Fouad Ajami should know better. And so should the editors of the New York Times Book Review.

(Barring major news events I feel compelled to comment on, this is my last blog until Labor Day. Enjoy the last month of summer, and for my Muslim readers, may God give you strength during the blessed and challenging first days of Ramadan.)

People that believe in imaginary sky daddies and perpetuate the rituals of cavemen should be institutionalized. They cause 90% of the pain, suffering, and death in the world. And have done so for thousands of years.

Islam as a community is cursed with “Group Think”, and cannot stand open debate or criticism. Which is really surprising considering the many factions in Islam with the Shi’a, Sunni and Wahabi sects fighting each other, but joining together to attack anyone from the outside who even questions their beliefs.Defenders of Islam like Eboo Patel have a history of attacking anyone who questions Islam or the community, sometimes quite strongly. Remember that one of the more repellent stereotypes of Islam is a desire to stifle open debate, to forbid to publicly ask questions or to prevent scholastic investigations into either culture or religion. Noted examples are the recent murder of Theo van Gogh; the Shiite fatwa demanding the death of Salmon Rushdie; the murderous threats against the Islamic feminists Irshad Manji and Ayaan Hirsi Ali; and the non- distribution of Sherry Jones’s new book, The Jewel of Medina; the closing down of a panel on Islam at the American Library Association. There is, indeed, a need for tolerance for Islam. But also there is a need for Moslims to show greater tolerance when they move from Moslem countries to non-Moslem countries. That has yet to be shown. One major question has never been settled even in Moslem countries- when are society’s customs different from those described in the Qu-ran? One of the big questions is that Moslems from many different countires have widely differing views on the treatment of women. Yet every attempt to question which are tribal customs and which are demanded in the Qu’ran are met with fierce resistance and death threats. If Moslems can’t resolve these contradictions among themselves, no wonder they attack Westerners and authors who even try to describe these fundamental differences.

I welcome this post..but on the other hand, I don’t believe it… Not really…not a bit…Read what’s happening today all over the world. So many problems come from Islam. I’m a relatively smart person..and I put together the pieces….We are not seeing a religion of love, of peace, of harmony, of kumbayah. We’re seeing people, united by a religion, killing others, raping, pillaging, humiliating, and then suing, complaining, and then lying…I used to hope that Islam was better than what I read…now I hope that I’m reading what’s happening, and not just the tip of the iceberg.Where’s the love in Islam…where’s the outreach..where’s the mutuality of embrace..show me…Or as Cromwell said..For God’s sake.. GO…Leave my country, my family, and me in peace and freedom.. no shariah..no taqyiah…and please don’t murder me

DRH2 | August 3, 2009 3:25 PM. A comment honest and true about Islam. Wonder how long until its removed as hate speech and a Saudi-FBI file is opened on him.

Much of LEEH1’s post below could be applied to all of the intolerant, punitive Abrahamic religions.

islam is the religion of “Pure Hypocrisy”..if it was a so-called religion of peace then why are 90% of all conflicts in the world involving islam.islam is nothing more than how the cleric interprets it and passes on the brainwash to the uneducated masses.

  • johnw5

Bluetalon’s comments are at first glance perhaps biased against the Islamic faith but then I realized that one could apply those words to any faith. Given that the Catholic Church has been the purveyor of genocide across the world on a scale far greater than that of all other faiths, dictators, etc. combined, perhaps the call for us all to move into a more evolved and civilized world is a wise voice, even if it is crying in the wilderness. As Gandhi perhaps apocryphally said when asked what he thought of American civilization: “I’m all for it”.

I wrote the NYT Public Editor last week after reading the Bawter review – both regarding its selection, and the choice of reviewer, and received no reply. Therefore its not surprising to see a similar result again this week – as with Ajami, whose biases are well known. There’s simply no consitutency anymore for Muslim “fairplay”, be it in literature or elsewhere (one needs to only read the comments from this unmoderated forum to see the types of intellects we are up against…).

What would people do when they are forcibly evicted from their own homes? You tell me. In the news today from the ME:“Hundreds of leftists, including Arabs and Jews, protested the eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in the occupied east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in the early hours of Monday morning.

There are violent Islamists and there are cryptic Islamists–clean shaved and English Speaker — All have the same agenda! Force the world to surrender to Islam. If there is any thing dishonest about Islam, it is Islam itself.

  • pioneer1

The followers of mythology-based belief systems have been raping and pillaging for centuries and are proud of it. Despite what this author may want to believe, the conversation on Islam is completely controlled by those who seek us harm wherever they can find us; as other commentators note, Islam has not had a Reformation and dissident views or even mild voiced concerns are met with death threats. Intellectual curiosity need not apply here.

  • alkaleylcom

JWX2,Your opinion is not supported by the facts. The greatest crimes of humanity were not committed by Muslims so how can Islam be responsible for 90% of all conflicts.World World 1The facts don’t support your statements.

  • alkaleylcom

PIONEER1,What do you mean about “the conversation on Islam is completely controlled by those who seek us harm wherever they can find us”. No one is controlling the debating about Islam. Despite all the negative things and lies you hear in the media about Islam, you should ponder on these facts:1. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the US since 9/11. Why is this? Is it because someone force them to accept the religion or someone put a gun to their head? Is it because they took the time to educate themselves on the facts and were guided to the truth?2. Women are now accepting Islam in great numbers. Why are women coming to a religion that is oppressive to women? Is it because they took the time to educate themselves on the facts and were guided to the truth?Despite the lies, the misinformation and the anti-Islamic environment in the US. Some of my fellow Americans are open minded and we took the time to find out the truth.

The Zio-fascist bent of the NYT was on display in its Book Review with Walt & Mearshiemer’s superb book, The Israel Lobby. The regular Times reviewer gave it the glowing review it deserves. Then the Times publishes another review, this one scathing, by a card-carrying member of The Israel Lobby. The Times also gave a glowing review to Joan Peters’ now-discredited From Time Immemorial, as well as The Protocols of the Elders of Dershowitz, i.e., any of Dershowtiz’s discredited books on Israel.

  • Garak

The Reality of Judaism 101:Moses was a genocidal maniac who directed the Jews to commit the first recorded genocides in human history. Judaism is based on racial superiority and genocide of non-Jewish Untermenschen. Jews have never tolerated non-Jews in areas they control. Non-Jews are liquidated as a race to leave room for the Judaic Master Race. The Jews’ holy book is filled with hatred of non-Jews, genocide of non-Jews, contempt for non-Jews, and racial demonization of non-Jews. The Third Reich was nothing but a German version of Israel.Hitler had nothing on the Jews; his Final Solution was taken straight of the Old Testament. Look at the Jews today: Bernie Madoff, Jonathan Pollard, the neocons, Wall St investment bankers, bulldozing homes on top of its inhabitants, massacring entire Palestinian villages to steal their land, dropping 1 million cluster bombs on civilian areas of Lebanon, stealing America’s most secret military technology and then selling it to Communist China, dropping 2-ton bombs on apartment buildings, butchering Muslims praying peacefully at shrines, attacking the USS Liberty and machine-gunning American sailors in life rafts, raping the US Treasury, feeding us false intelligence, the assassinations of Count Bernadotte and British officials, using Nazi tactics of collective punishment, planting bombs at markets, using terror and ethnic cleansig as the primary instrument of state policy, the list goes on and on.

  • Farnaz1Mansouri1

Eboo,Note the company your review has put you in. The reviewer in question, Fouad Agami is, as everyone knows, Muslim. Yet somehow, one of WaPo’s resident true green Muslim Nazis, Garak, takes the opportunity to vent against the New York Times, which, btw, is owned by Christians, as well as Jews.Note, too, UKBA’s post, which also has nothing to do with Ajami, a very well-known academic and Middle East commentator. What does this tell us, Eboo? The Nazi Garak, the bigot Ukba are not alone….All of their problems stem not from their mental and moral defects, but from “the Jews.” Which Jews? Mommie needs to teach Garak how to think and behave. Thus far, Mommie doesn’t seem to have done very well.

  • Farnaz1Mansouri1

Dear Eboo,A word or two about yours truly. As you may recall, and as bloggers hear know, this Iranian Jew, one of the now more than one million ethnically cleansed from Iran, has frequently taken on anti-Islamic trolls.Yet, here we have the Nazi Garak, a card carrying member of the Nazi party, a brown-shirt, posting in ways that others have done on this thread. UKBA, I leave aside, for the moment.I am not now replying as I could to Nazi Garak since I would like to see if anyone, ideally, a Muslim, has something to say to the Nazi. I, myself, have tried kind explanations, education, with him in the past, that is, before his Nazism became apparent, before all hope of redeeming him, of reasoning with him became evidently pointless.

  • Farnaz1Mansouri1

Dear Eboo,Just a postscript: Now that Nazi Garak, et al, know that the Times is owned by Episcopalians, WaPo, the New Wall Street Journal, also owned by Christians, do you think we’ll be hearing about the “Christian-owned” media? No? You don’t think so. Neither do I. Why is that, Eboo? And since Ajami is Muslim, shouldn’t Garak refer to him as an IslamoNazi? Why doesn’t he, Eboo? And why doesn’t UKBA?And, Eboo, note how Garak takes his cure in railing against Judaism, of which he knows less than nothing, from the CATHOLIC CCNL? Why doesn’t he rail against Catholicism? We know. Mommie told him not to take risks with the majority, not with majority Christians cuz those folks don’t play. And it’s their country.Easy to hit at those one thinks can’t fight back. But Garak’s Nazi mom forgot to tell him that the times have changed. Unlike Garak, UKBA, I’m neither a racist nor a bigot. What I’ve learned is to mirror the filth they spew, that you don’t stop a wild boar by talking it through with him. It took us Jews six thousand years to learn this, Eboo; we are the people of the Book. We believe masculinity rests in learning and intelligence, not in battle. But we must survive in Garak’s world. And we will, Eboo. Will check back later.

How much can the Palestinians suffer under Israeli occupation made possible by American tax dollars? How long will they suffer before the world takes notice? Why is it when they revolt against the Israelis we call them terrorists when they in reality are the true victims? Don’t they deserve to live in dignity and raise their children in peace? These are articles from different news wires. Things Americans are held in the dark about: “Since June 2007 the Israeli government has imposed almost complete closure over the Gaza Strip. The siege prevents nearly all movement of people or goods to and from the coastal region with only minimal amounts of humanitarian provisions inconsistently allowed in. With the exception of a small amount of carnations allowed out earlier this year, there has been a virtual ban on all exports from Gaza since 2007. A quick socio-economic glimpse of Gaza includes agricultural losses totaling US $30 million and more than 40,000 jobs for the 2007/2008 season, the suspension of 98% of industrial operations, and more than 80% of Gaza’s population is now dependent on humanitarian aid from international aid providing agencies.”“Closure of Gaza and the West Bank has intermittently been imposed since 1991. While Israel prevents movement and access in the name of temporary security measures, the regularity and extent of these mechanisms, particularly since the Oslo process, represents an institutionalized policy of closure. Israel’s current siege on Gaza reflects an unprecedented and severe application of the closure policy. In the past year internationals have tried to break the siege on Gaza by bringing critical medical supplies and other humanitarian goods into Gaza. While the world’s most powerful and influential states stand back and watch the complete collapse of Gaza’s economy and livelihood of its population, citizens around the world are joining Palestinians in various forms to break the siege on Gaza.”“Israel maintains complete control over Gaza’s airspace and territorial waters, near complete control over travel into or out of Gaza, near complete control over Gaza’s imports and exports, and near complete control over Gaza’s own tax revenues. Little is allowed in. As a result, Gaza’s economy has completely collapsed.” “Because of shortages in fuel and spare parts, Gaza’s only power plant is running at less than 70 per cent of capacity, and electrical outages of several hours a day are the rule rather than the exception.

  • ukba

Part 2:The humanitarian condition of the one and a half million men, women and children illegally incarcerated in Gaza is now at its worst point in the last 40 years of Israeli occupation.”What does the United do to help these victims of Israeli aggressions? “Since the October War in 1973, Washington has provided Israel with a level of support dwarfing the amounts provided to any other state. It has been the largest annual recipient of direct U.S. economic and military assistance since 1976 and the largest total recipient since World War ll. Total direct U.S. aid to Israel amounts to well over $140 billion in 2003 dollars. Israel receives about $3 billion in direct foreign assistance each year, which is roughly one-fifth of America’s entire foreign aid budget. In per capita terms, the United States gives each Israeli a direct subsidy worth about $500 per year. This largesse is especially striking when one realizes that Israel is now a wealthy industrial state with a per capita income roughly equal to South Korea or Spain.” by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt in “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy”“Since 1972, the US has used its veto power to prevent the adoption of 42 UN resolutions that condemned or severely criticized actions by the State of Israel. The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs has estimated that from 1974-2003 Israel benefited from more than $45 billion in waived loans from the US.”Why are we helping the Israelis commit these atrocities?

I never liked that Uncle Tom Fuad Ajami. He supported the invasion of Iraq and calls it just war. And his friends are neocons among them Paul Wolfowitz. From what the articles I’ve read and the interviews I’ve seen on TV he is more to the right of the neocons than the most conservatives of Bush administration. I don’t if that’s what he believes but I guess he had to make a living and being anti-Arab and anti-Muslim pays very well in this country especially when conservatives are in power. From Wikipedia: “Ajami has been referred to by Edward Said as “virulently and ideologically anti-Arab” and as “a man who was once a progressive supporter of the Palestinian struggle who has now converted to the far Right and has espoused Zionism and American imperialism without reservation.”“Eight days after U.S. President Barack Obama took office, a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece by Ajami called Obama a “messenger of the old, settled ways,” claimed that the George W. Bush administration’s diplomacy had had “revolutionary impact,” and chided Obama for not praising the Iraq War.”

Don’t the holy books that accompany the Quran tell about how Muhammad beheaded a bunch of people and how he married a 9 year-old? How can anyone defend any of these as “holy” books? Or ask for “tolerance”? I will never tolerate barbary, or it’s guise of religion.

In reference to UKBA’s post, I will say briefly that Israel has responded to weekly terrorist attacks since 1948. Though it has lost far more than the US in the WTC, it did launch invasions and bombing attacks on the scale of the American assaults on Afghanistan and Iraq, which the wittle UKBA will not discuss because he’s askeered of the AmeriChristians. And he should be.He does not discuss the support this country gives the animal Mubarak, who treats Palestinians as if it were they who were the animals, setting aside what he does to Christians. Then, of course, he sells weapons to Hamas, etc., foments antisemitism, which is part of the elementary school curriculum. He takes the billions we give him, keeps most of it, gives the rest to the wealthy families, while Egyptians literally starve to death during the current food crisis.Where is UKBA’s outrage? UKBA should stop crying croccodile tears for the Palestinians, of whom he hardly knows any. I do. If he cared, he’d cry for how they are treated in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan. If the Arabs had accepted Proposition 181, there would have been a Palestinian state since 1948. No other nation in the region wanted that, accepted the possibility, until it became clear that it would have to happen. In the meantime, Israel, through terror, negotiated in good faith with Pedophile Chairman Arafat. Had Arafat not begun the second intifada, there would be a Palestine. But that had never been the plan.In the meantime, rockets continue to be fired from Lebanon and from Gaza, and Hamas attacks Fata. The future does not look good. What this has to do with Ajami is not clear.

  • Farnaz1Mansouri1

Perhaps UKBA can tell us how the 108,000 Jews of Tunisia became 1500. And while he is at it, he can explain how the Jews of Egypt now number four (4), how Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, etc., were also ethnically cleansed?Perhaps he can tell us how the few Jews living in the region are restricted in their civil rights, cannot get jobs, how their children cannot attend school, how their daughters are forced to cover themselves.Perhaps he can tell us how they fair in these nations where scapegoating Jews is used by dictators to divert attention from the ills of those countries. Perhaps he can apprise us of the contents of the national newspapers of said nations. We’d like to know. Of course, if UKBA cannot do it, I certainly can.Perhaps, he can explain to us how Egyptian Jews, among others, who lived in Egypt before there was such a thing as Islam, were killed, deported, forced to flee.Maybe, UKBA would like to explain to me why my family, which lived in Iran since at least the twelfth century was forced to flee in the night. Maybe, he can tell me why when I was a child, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, dragged our gentle family friend Ismael out of our home, killing him as they were taking him into custody, as my sister and I screamed and screamed and blood spattered on our clothes.Maybe, he can find out what they did with his body, with all the other Jewish bodies, and Muslim bodies. Their families would like to bury them.

Eboo pontificates thus; Which of these heritages Muslims are “contributing” to this country? As I see it they are importing the same attributes that drove them out of their failed societies to make this one in their image with supremacies, tribalism, racism, intolerance as well as religious and gender discriminations. You could feel all this venom in just one Friday sermon in the mosque of your choice.

Yes, Islam has a lot to offer the west. Honor killings, jihad, fatwas, anti-semitism, the whole scale degradation of women as a class, child abuse – as we just witnessed in Gaza, where some 400 pre-pubescent girls were married off to perverts. But, to be fair, they are following in their leader’s footsteps. To that we can add total religious intolerance, sharia law and despotic, theocratic rulers who routinely murder homosexuals, cut off hands, heads and feet – no, really. Unlike what the religious right is accused of – they really do it.Whats not to like?Whats not to like?

Ajami should know better. European- Muslim relations should be examined in their historical perspective. Most Muslims in European countries with the exception of the Balkans are from countries previously colonized by Europeans. The Muslim psyche was shaped as a reaction to 200 years of European colonialism which sought to dominate Muslim people and appropriate their resources. The French government took away the freedom to wear the hijab for Muslim women in schools, yet Europeans invoke “freedom of the press” for publishing cartoons. Isn’t the European definition of “freedom” ethnocentric?Europe also has a long history of anti-Semitism. From the end of the 14th century, Jews were expelled, killed and their property stolen by the Europeans. They demonized Jews which ultimately culminated in the Holocaust.Today, Muslims in Europe are being demonized the same way Jews were demonized for 7 centuries. Mr. Ajami is a fellow traveller with them.

A study of the British assessment of the people they ruled over shows that the British view of natives hardly differed from the Nazi view of Jews, Gypsies and “Asiatic barbarians” (i.e. Russians). Lord Cromer, Britain’s proconsul in Egypt (1883-1907), divided humanity into “governing races” and “subject races”, while T. E. Lawrence called Egyptians “worms”. This is hardly different from “vermin”, the Nazi epithet for Jews.Lord Balfour, whose 1917 declaration handed over Palestinians to Europeans, was intensely anti-Jewish and was so disturbed by the possible mass migration of east European Jews into Britain following pogroms in Russia that as prime minister he had the Aliens Act passed in 1905 to block their migration to Britain. And Mark Sykes (of the Sykes-Picot pact fame) called the Jews “the archetype of cosmopolitan financier, rootless moneygrubber….contemptible”.Churchill believed that “atheistic Jews” were behind the Russian revolution, and often referred to the Bolsheviks as “bacillus” — a pet Nazi term for Jews. An article “By the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill” in the February 8, 1920, issue of the Illustrated Sunday Herald, named Karl Marx, Bela Kuhn, Rosa Luxembourg and others among Jews who were behind “every subversive movement” in the 19th century. He also accused Trotsky of attempting to set up a world communist empire “under Jewish domination”. Churchill also suggested that the crippled among the British must be put to death.THE POSTER WHO USES THE KORAN AS TOILET PAPER REVEALS A LOT ABOUT HIMSELF. PERHAPS HE IS BELOW EVEN ARCHIE BUNKER IN THE LADDER OF HUMAN HEIRARCHY.

“Today, Muslims in Europe are being demonized the same way Jews were demonized for 7 centuries. Mr. Ajami is a fellow traveller with them.”European Jews have been ruthlessly persecuted since the reign of Constantine, 3rd century BCE. They have been slaughtered, tortured all over Europe by the Christians/Catholics although there were, of course, Jews in Europe long before there were Christians. However, although Jews have been outspoken in Germany and elsewhere about widespread prejudice against Muslims, Muslim antisemitism is so rampant, so dangerous that the EU nations issued a statement to European Jews advising them on how to protect themselves from European Muslims. Not, btw., that European Christians aren’t antisemitic, don’t hate Muslims. They do.All of this racism, regardless of whom it is diriected is horrible. For European Jews, it is horrible thing thing for them to see themselves again abandoned to racists. Muslim antisemitism, it should be said in the interest of fairness, was greatly accelerated by the Crusades and other EuroChristian ventures in the Middle East. While the Crusaders were walking knee-deep in Jewish and Muslim blood and bone, they took the time to spread antisemitism. HOwever, the mass murder of the Qurayza Jews, about which more later, suggests that Muslim racism cannot be laid entirely at the hands of the EuroChristians.Still, Jews are not quite so endangered in Europe as in the Middle East, from which most have been exiled, but they are in enough trouble in the “Old World” that emigration is underway. They are leaving for Israel, leaving the homes, which in some cases, they have known for centuries. This is the case for French Jews.By the way, as recent events in Pakistan and Egypt indicate, there is at least as much anti-Christianity as there is antisemitism in many Muslim countries and in Muslim communities. One can, in fact, hear it any Friday night at any number of Mosques. Would it were otherwise. Most Muslims do know, however, that t is not safe to openly spout antiChristian rhetoric either in the US or in Europe. This they know. Jews, however, appear to some to be safe targets.Uhm, guess again. We’re not.

Balfour:Although irrelevant to Ajami, Balfour was a fundamentalist Christian. He believed Jews had to gather at Yerushalem (Jerusalem) in order for the Apocalypse to occur. The Brits, when they found that they had dismayed Egypt, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, went into advanced English Oil Panic, the only remedy for which was to hang Jews in the streets of Israel, fire on boats bringing survivors from Germany, killing them, and imprisoning thousands on the Island of Cypress, in Brit. style concentrations camps.Btw., it was the Brits who introduced Concentration Camps to the world, during the Boer War.

” Islam has much to contribute to the west” Like what Mr.Patel? Sucide bombings and be-headings? Thanks a lot. Europeans have been tough with muslims, so they prospered. Indians were soft on them- so we have all the trouble here. Centuries of genocide is forgotten and muslims are now considered victims in India. Mr.Patel, face it. Islam is not a tolerant religion. Weather you like it or not.

Yeah, yeah…yadda yadda. The truth is that Islam is only a religion of peace if you’re Moslem. If you’re not then at best it is a ticket to slavery and at worst it is a death sentence. take your Koran in your arm and don’t let the door hit you on the butt on the way out. Beat it. We’ve got enough problems with our own fundamentalists…we don’t need any more.

Those who keep inserting McVeigh and Jim Jones names in their “defense” that Islam is not the only terrorist ideology, fail to distinguish between a criminal who commits a crime and a devout person who commits crimes in the name of his faith. Ahaab1,Eric Rudolph blew up an abortion clinic because of obsessively religious beliefs on abortion. He also attacked the Olympics because his ideology was opposed to the U.N. His were not crimes for gain. They were motivated by his beliefsThe KKK’s charter mentions God and Christianity more often than race. The represent themselves as following a more pure version than standard, more inclusive Christianity. And they really believe it. They killed to keep that “purity” many times. Their crimes weren’t crimes for gain. They were motivated by belief. The IRA was bombing about political domination, but religion was a unifying force that kept the fight alive. Most active IRA fighters were devoutly Catholic. Many of the crimes they committed were not crimes for gain. They were motivated by belief.Jim Jones spurred the largest mass suicide in recorded history out of fear and paranoia, but his followers submitted out of religious belief. David Koresh led his followers out of religious belief. Richard Butler created the Church of Christ Christian, founded on anti-Semitism, race hatred and admiration of Hitler, but a “Christian” religion none the less. Several terrorist acts have been linked to his former Hayden Lake compound. These are just a few examples. I could go on and on. Your statement that Islamic terrorism is somehow more about faith than Klan or Christian Identity terrorism simply is not borne out by the facts. Try again.

SWORD AND WAR METAPHORS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT:Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. [Mt 10.34 NRSV] For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. [Mt. 10.35-39] ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Muslims do not believe that Jesus (p.b.h) preached violence. The point is if one takes quotes from scriptures out of context, one can project that religion to be violent.ABHAB and others have been doing just that about Islam. The Quran is a collections of messages from God over a period of 22 years. Each message has the context of the events of that day.Early Muslims were fighting for their survival. If Pagans attacked Muslims, the message’s address is about those pagans. If Christians were fighting Muslims to weaken Islam, the message addresses about those Christians. There is no blanket condemnation of Christianity or Judaism. The message of Muhammad indeed was monotheism.

There are a couple of flat out lies Islamic people are telling about Western civilization on this question here. The first is that all Western development in science is largely underpinned by “Islamic science”, or “Chinese science”, etc.–As if there would not have been a scientific revolution in the West without especially Islam. The fact is the scientific revolution is virtually all Western–which is why worldwide it is known as the scientific revolution. Furthermore all the “science” (if we can call it that) prior to the West led to nothing like what has occurred from the scientific revolution in the West to the present day.Western civilization has literally gone to the moon. The development of the West from the scientific revolution onward has been the most profound and rapid advance of humanity ever. In comparison to this rapid and profound advance every other civilization which has existed has been left standing still–all the other civilizations resembling one another rather than the West for being so utterly slow in change and development. The second lie told about the West from Islamic people here is related to the first lie. Namely the lie that the spread of the West worldwide has been by “organized violence by the West rather than by any ideas and values”. This dirty lie simultaneously erases from the West all her accomplishments (especially scientific) and elevates “organized violence” as her only achievement. But for all violence of the West the West has stood for the brightest political hope of the world–democracy–and her ideas not only triumph over her own violence but triumph over the backwardness of all other civilizations. The entire world is following the West in her scientific achievements, economic practices, etc. Only a coward and a liar would say all the achievements of the West in science largely rely on other civilizations “scientific advances” and that all really the West stands for is “organized violence”. And apparently the most envious and cowardly liars belong to the Islamic world–a civilization that literally stands as the worldwide symbol of backwardness against the advance of Western ideas. But Islam will collapse because over all the world Western science progresses–and Western economics and political ideas progress too. The fate of Islam is sealed: it either gives way to secularity and modernity like so many nations from the West to the East or it will be forced to change by the entire rest of the world not willing to accept a backward and bitter civilization. No lie by Islam against the West can change that fact.

In the present anti-Islamic environment created by the last administration, it is not surprising that people like Eboo Patel who find it difficult to not respond to unfair onslaught on Islam are squarely criticised and deamonised.

  • daniel12

The words of Patel below…Is this America he is talking about (Patel speaking of Ajami)? This country that was built on immigrants coming and bringing the best of their heritage – arts, cuisine, work ethic, commitment to education, and yes, religious tradition. I mean, where would we be without Catholic universities or Jewish philanthropy? Does Ajami really think nations are built by immigrants leaving their heritage at home? Patel, your above words show how much you misunderstand America. America was created more on letting go of the past than dragging the past to the new world. Time and again only such things as cuisine tell of the past. As for arts, film is new, created by America. Every single musical tradition–jazz, blues, rock, country–was created in America. As for commitment to education, America created universities to match the transformation in America. American universities do not exist to drag the past around. The Catholic universities and other religious institutions for education are well known for not being cutting edge. Education in religion is precisely not education in being an American. America depends on people being innovative–just look around you at airplanes, computers, cars, television. Muslims such as yourself–yes, even ones with good will such as yourself–are a danger. You say immigrants bring their commitment to education? What education from the Islamic world is fit for America? You demonstrate no understanding of American history at all. All the immigrants to America had to throw off a lot of the past to get along with other people, and this compromise–which is a large deal of what we mean by democracy–was a concentration on economics,–business practice–and technological innovation.–And it was technological innovation which drove the creation of NEW arts. Again, film, and also recording equipment, electric guitars, etc. As for immigrants bringing their work ethic, it was precisely their work ethic left behind which made it possible to have the America of today. America always has demanded a stronger work ethic than any work ethic from afar dragged to America. And commitment to religious tradition? Everyone can see that if you take an American out of his church or other preferred place of worship you get precisely…an American. In other words people meet precisely on a level which is not religious–more on a business level than any other. A final note: you say nations are built by immigrants bringing the best from their countries. What nations other than America do you mean? America is the only nation which has been created by “others”. America is made entirely of others and all us others had to comprise, leave a lot behind and in fact look forward, literally invent the nation. If you cannot grasp that then I am sorry to say you are not an American.

  • DanielintheLionsDen

Daniel12I read your comment and I did not know it was you writing it. I think you have made a very good argument. I also believe that Islam must be radically changed, or else it will die out. It cannot continue as it is today. The tension that is building in the Islamic world as it is contorted to fit the modern world, will one day be released, like the engery in an earthquake, and in a sudden tectonic movement, things will be reset, in equilibirium, again.

  • svengerald

Mr Patel, I do not believe you are as familiar with history as you should be to make comments as those above. Islam has never been tolerant. I am astounded that a “journalist” would even address something he thought was untrue by bashing it without doing his homework. Of course for you to do your homework would require you to face up to the truth about islam, and having read your blog often and listened to you on NPR once, I don’t believe the truth would be “convenient” for your side of this debate, the debate about “tolerant, peaceful islam”

  • Montedoro

Eboo Patel is the dishonest one here. His mission is not to tell the truth, but to defend the image of Islam in the minds of naive non-Moslems by obfuscating the truth. First of all, the notion that Moslem Spain was a land of tolerance is false. Non-Moslems were always second-class citizens (subjects, actually)and always subject to the whims of the particular Moslem rulers. Maimonides had to flee Spain for his life from the Moslem atrocities of his day.Patel is also dishonest when it comes to Moslem immigrants to Europe and America compared to non-Moslem immigrants. Non-Moslem immigrants, while retaining their ethnicity and religion always accepted the American constitutional order and American law. They became Americans in spirit. Moslem immigrants, to the extent that they are religious, do NOT assimilate in spirit because their primary loyalty is to the worldwide Ummah, to the Koran and the example of Muhammad. These are totally incompatible with the American constitution, whereas Christianity and Judaism are not incompatible with the American Constitution. Therefore, a Moslem must make a choice between Islam and the principles of the American constitution. Non-Moslem immigrants never have to make that choice because their religious values do not contradict the American Constitution. It is not a coincidence, for example, that ALL Moslem-majority countries, with the approval of their highest Islamic religious authorities, reject the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subscribe, instead, to the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam which makes Islam legally superior to all other religions and which makes all human rights subject to the Sharia. This means no equality before the law for non-Moslems, and it means no gender equality.

I would have to ask who is really unEuropean, when Europeans themselves engage in behavior today (drug abuse, prostitution, etc.) which would not have been tolerated in Europe 50 years ago, not to mention the fact that 50 years ago few European women worked outside the home, etc. Are today’s Muslims really that out-of-character to European social standards of the past thousand or so years? No, only by the standard of the past few decades.

If you don’t know Hebrew and aren’t familiar with Koine Greek then how in the world can you all talk about Islam? We’re in the 21st century folks. Get a Mechanical Quran Arabic to Hebrew and then you can discuss Islam. That’s the problem with the past administration. We have a wonderful Iranian connection, in Chicago, The UofChicago’s Oriental Institute. They can do this. Put up on their website a Mechanical Translation/English Transliteration of the Quran Arabic to Hebrew. Watch how fast all Hebrew Day Schools will be able to read the Quran. RaMBaM did this in his head during the Golden Age of Islam and Judaism. We’re so primitive in our intellect on the Northern Hemisphere of the Planet Earth with the Star defining our dome and the lunar satellite tracking the Star at night and man-made satellites. The Muslim World will never do this. For goodness sakes, the President’s children are in a Christian school that favors a Chinese translation of the Koran instead of a Hebrew translation. For me the Quran is simply like the Siddur. A Chumash it is not. The Chumash is the basis of Bible and Quran. I asked Jeff Benner about this. He said he didn’t have time to incorporate the Quran in his expertise of Hebrew. He already has published Mechanical Translation of Genesis and Mechanical Translation of Exodus, Hebrew to English. Some Israeli Palestinians can be imported to do this by the Iranian friendly Oriental Institute of the UofChicago.

For me the jury is still out on Islam. I know muslims in America who I would never consider “different” than any other American. However, what I read of the Koran is disturbing. Thus the “wait and see” attitude. I think that part of the problem is that we live in a world that is increasing overpopulated. During times of stress people tend to gravitate to a group they identify with. So far, most Americans still identify mostly with the group “American” but I worry that they might start to identify more with subgroups.

Allah revealed His message to Muhammad who was not a pedophile, who was not a murdered , who was not a slave owner, who did not massacre innocent Jews and drove them out of Arabia, who did not commit legalized adultery aka polygamy, who did not murder a poetess named Asma bint Marwan while she was sleeping with her children, in short a perfect huamn who by the way did not have two sexual slaves Mriah and Rayhana, Rayhana being captured as war booty.Eboo says Islam is just perfect, perfect perfect and does not need reform.PS: Eboo also says the burkha is meant to and to focus women’s vision.

Muslims live in an imaginary world where most have been brain washed to believe that the allah they pray to is the God (large G). Allah is the moon god (little g) and nothing more. The whole religion is a farce and irrelevant. And if islam is about peace, why don’t we observe what a bunch of barbaric muslims did to several christians in Pakistan a few days ago. All muslims beware, the God (big G) will judge you one day and ask why you persecuted his people, the Jews and the Christians. Those who keep parroting intolerance should know:Muslims have been told to employ the most respectful and polite methods: “Call to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the best manner…” (Quran, 16: 125) And if the non-Muslims incline to disagree with the message of Islam, despite all the arguments and logic produced by the Muslims, the latter are still not to resort to any form of religious compulsion or violent reaction.God declares: “There is no compulsion in religion…” (Quran, 2: 256) “But if they dispute with thee, say: I submit myself entirely to Allah and (so does) he who follows me. And say to those who have been given the Book and the Unlearned (people): Do you submit yourselves? If they submit, then indeed they follow the right way; and if they turn back, thy duty is only to deliver the message…” (Quran, 3: 19)“And if thy lord had pleased, all those who are in the earth would have believed, all of them. Wilt thou then force men till they are believers?” (Quran, 10; 99) “And say: The Truth is from your Lord; so let him who please believe, and let him who please disbelieve…” (Quran, 18: 29) These verses clearly establish: (1) Islam denounces forced-conversion; and (2) Islam does not enjoin Muslims to wage war for the spread of faith. Not only Muslims are prohibited from forcing Islam on non-Muslims, they have also been ordered to deal with them in a just and kind manner: “Allah forbids you not respecting those who fight you not for religion, nor drive you from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly. Surely Allah loves the doers of justice. Allah forbids you only respecting those who fight you for religion, and drive you forth from your homes and help (others) in your expulsion, that you make friends of them; and whoever makes friends of them, these are the wrongdoers.” (Quran, 60: 8,9)Islam not only acknowledges all the previous prophets and messengers, like Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus, etc., and all the previous revelations, like the Torah, the Psalms, etc., but it goes a step further: Muslims have been strictly forbidden in the Quran from using any insulting remarks about any deity worshipped by any non-Muslim: “And abuse not those whom they call upon besides Allah…” (Quran, 6: 109) Can there be a more decisive proof of the marvelously tolerant nature of Islam?

Mr. patel is himself either dishonest about Islam or unaware. the so-called “Golden Age” in Spain was largely a myth, invented by 19th century Jewish and Christian orientalists in an effort to reform their own socieites by showing how enlightened Islamic society was. The occasional Jew or Christian who rose to high office was the exception rather than the rule. And yes, there was also the occasional pogrom. In 1066, for example, saw Muslims rioting in the Jewish quarter of the city, killing over 1000 families. Perhaps the Muslim rioters were misinformed about Islam. Contemporary Arabic poet Abu Ishaq indicated the attitude the tolerant society lauded by Mr. Patel.

The Brother clearly believes that the rave review had everything to do with the Book Review’s point of view that the contents of the book were, to put it simply, true; hence the wonderful photo juxtaposing the “the abnormal” women in the foreground against the “normal” women in the background as the other bookend supporting the conclusion that Islam is……. aberrant.

Eboo, considering that there are in our planet several species of obligate carnivores( same as obligate predators), how can you believe in a just creator, which is part of your faith? Would make more sense to embrace biological evolution and freethinking and dischard the sky daddy’s belief you have ? Then and only then, you’ll be able to impartially judge any book’s reviewer

‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ as the saying goes. One man’s religious book can seem like a ‘manifesto of terror’ to another. Muslims fervently believe in Koran whose values run counter to present day democratic principles. Koran openly calls for the killing or converting of non-believers (i.e. pagans) and idolaters (i.e. Hindus and Buddhists) and for oppressing and humiliating the People of the Book (i.e. Jews and Christians). Koran allows Muslims to take four wives, commands women to wear burqa, allows Muslim husbands to divorce their wives just by the word of mouth and forbids women to go out unless accompanied by their husband, brother or father. So struggle of Muslims in this day and age is a struggle to reconcile Koran’s sermons that run counter to present day values.Koran calls on Muslims to wage jihad against non-Muslims 2:191, 2:193, 4:66, 4:84, 5:33, 8:12, 8:15-18, 8:39, 8:59-60, 8:65, 9:2, 9:5, 9:14, 9:29, 9:39, 9:73, 9:111, 9:123, 25:52, 37:22-23, 47:4, 48:29, 69:30.

Regrettably the editor has chosen not to post my comment on this posting….I would sincerely ask that the editor reconsider this posting. Hypocrisy, it’s possible the problem isn’t content, but length. I recently had a post held for the first time, and it puzzled me. I was sure it wasn’t content (since Spidermean is posted regularly), and I didn’t think length was the problem, as I thought I had seen longer posts. However, I split it in half and it was posted right away. Try that (or aggressive editing for length, and see if you go up.

Let’s face it some religions/cults and cultures are simply inferior to others. Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s Russia, the Soviet Union, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, Mao’s China, Castro’s Cuba, Chavez’s Venezuela and most of the Middle East are all examples of inferior cultures by almost any measure. has become a twisted, sick religion and the Muslims are a net negative for Europe. It has been hundreds of years since Islam has been a net positive contributor to humanity.

  • bbcrock

Growing up in the DC area I had several Muslim friends in junior high and high school who complained about the violence, the intolerance, the ugliness and anger in Islam. I had another school friend who grew slowly anti-semitic and seemed to buy into all the anger about the “Western World” of which he was a part.I had friends who complained about oppressive Christian churches too and know people who let their western religious beliefs drive their fear and anger.I know people in college who had real, valid complaints against their Jewish neighborhood and social control in Norther New Jersey.Eboo Patel once again points fingers and plays the blame game when my friends looked inward and were philosophical to address the real, known issues of anger and violence.

Zebra4 says: “God declares: “There is no compulsion in religion…” (Quran, 2: 256) “But if they dispute with thee, say: I submit myself entirely to Allah and (so does) he who follows me. And say to those who have been given the Book and the Unlearned (people): Do you submit yourselves? If they submit, then indeed they follow the right way; and if they turn back, thy duty is only to deliver the message…” (Quran, 3: 19)”I hope Zebra4 will tell that to the small children who were burned to death by the Moslems in Pakistan. What is it about Moslems that always makes them so angry? Don’t they have any emotion besides suicidal or murderous rage? Why are we always reading about the murder of innocents by Moslems who are angry over cartoons or books or some other slight by artists? When the children began to be burned alive in Pakistan, why did no single Moslem in the crowd try to save the screaming children? They can kill in mobs, but there are no heroes to save burning children at all? Is it just to make a barbecue of young children to Allah because their parents aren’t Moslem? Is Allah so weak in your religion that Moslems must burn children alive to defend his honor? And then the Moslems say their is no compulsion in Islam, only murderous death if you are not Moslem? And then they get angry when others point out the inconsistency? And Eboo is annoyed because the west doesn’t understand Islam? Sorry guy. We understand it too well.It leaves ashes in our mouth.

All muslims may not be terrorist, but all terrorist are Muslims.khemb,So you’ve never heard of Timothy McVeigh, Terry Anderson, Robert Matthews? What about last year’s slaugher of “liberals” at a Unitarian church? Or the killing of abortion providers? No KKK, Aryan Nations, IRA or Weathermen in your world?I’m afraid no group has a corner on savage, stupid behavior. Saying “It’s them, those are the bad guys, we’re always good on my side,” just makes us less likely to spot the danger when it arises closer to home. Please, get some perspective. It’s free, and it really helps prevent outbursts of goofy statments like the one above.

No doubt, there are good and bad people everywhere. I condemn the killing of Christians in Pakistan on the pretext that someone in the Christian community committed the act of blasphemy.Blasphemy might have occured, just like someone here posted that he uses the pages from the Koran as a toilet paper. There is evil everywhere and there are good people everywhere. The INDEPENDENT daily of U.K published an interesting article about the subject giving examples of what Muslims have done and what non_Muslims have done:HEADLINES:”Muslim killed daughter for the dishonor of having boyfriend” (SEpt 30, 2003)”Muslim husband who killed his wife and Children of their Western Ways” (Feb. 21 2007)”Devout Muslim Father kills Daughter” SO, WHAT DO NON-MUSLIMS DO?”Father Arrested for Killing 13-month old daughter”Father charged for homicide by denying medical aid to child due to religious beliefs.”(Wisconsin)”Husband shot wife in the Face. She gets a new face Transplant”(60 Minutes). One could find numerous examples of domestic violence in America. Domestic violence is rampat in America. These are the children of Judeo=Christian tradition.SWEEPY GENERALIZATIONS ABOUT ANY GROUP ARE NOT ACCOMPLISHING ANYTHING.

Of course, you could have used ‘builded’ like other, less-qualified writers here have, but that’s just me being silly. But I digress. Bad grammar aside, it is impossible for me to take any columnist at the WaPo seriously when they attack the New York Times. It’s like a primary school student arguing with Einstein over the existence of gravitons. The Washington Post — the newspaper given to us for free while serving in Vietnam, and the one I grew to love then as a voice of reason and intelligent discourse, has become nothing more than another version of that bastion of reverse-intellect and dishonest journalism, the Washington Times. While the WaPo uses sad, failed, right-wing propagandists like Krauthammer and Kristol to editorialize against an intelligent administration’s economic policies, the NYT employs people Like Nobel Prize-winner Paul Krugman.Oh well…Have a nice days Eboo!.

The Jews of the OT/Torah were some of the initiators of human bad behavior/example as shown by the atrocities committed against their neighbors. Biblical AtrocitiesExodus 32: 3,000 Israelites killed by Moses for worshipping the golden calf. Numbers 31: After killing all men, boys and married women among the Midianites, 32,000 virgins remain as booty for the Israelites. (If unmarried girls are a quarter of the population, then 96,000 people were killed.) Joshua: Joshua 8: 12,000 men and women, all the people of Ai, killed. Joshua 10: Joshua completely destroys Gibeon (“larger than Ai”), Makeddah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, Debir. “He left no survivors.” Joshua 11: Hazor destroyed. [Paul Johnson, A History of the Jews (1987), estimates the population of Hazor at ?> 50,000] Judges 1: 10,000 Canaanites k. at Battle of Bezek. Jerusalem and Zephath destroyed. Judges 3: ca. 10,000 Moabites k. at Jordan River. Judges 8: 120,000 Midianite soldiers k. by Gideon Judges 20: Benjamin attacked by other tribes. 25,000 killed.David: 2 Samuel 8: 22,000 Arameans of Damascus and 18,000 Edomites killed in 2 battles. 2 Samuel 10: 40,000 Aramean footsoldiers and 7,000 charioteers killed at Helam. 2 Samuel 18: 20,000 Israelites under Absalom killed at Ephraim.1 Kings 20: 100,000 Arameans killed by Israelites at Battle of Aphek. Another 27,000 killed by collapsing wall. 2 Chron 13: Judah beat Israel and inflicted 500,000 casualties. 2 Chron 25: Amaziah, king of Judah, k. 10,000 from Seir in battle and executed 10,000 POWs. Discharged Judean soldiers pillaged and killed 3,000. 2 Chron 28: Pekah, king of Israel, slew 120,000 Judeans TOTAL: That comes to about 1,283,000 mass killings specifically enumerated in the Bible. Were all these atrocities mythical/embellished? Possibly but then Judaism should own up the this with a rewrite of the OT/Torah.

The problem facing Eboo Patel is that he cannot face the truth about Islamic “culture.” He wants to brainwash people into thinking that Islam and the West can co-exist. As long as Islamists continue to be violent, subjugate women and try to destroy free speech, Islam and the West cannot co-exist.Nothing positive comes from Islamic nations. Anyone heard any good science or technology coming from Islamic nations recently? No. It is from the West that advancement takes place. Islam is only good for taking people back to the Dark Ages. Let’s not forget the violence that Islamists perpetrate as they try to spread the word. Islam needs to be banished from the West. The politically correct crowd cannot even see that Islamists are using the very freedoms of the West to undermine the West. The West will be in a long struggle to defeat this vilest of enemies.

  • cantabb1

It is strange that you, Mr Patel, are attacking the Reviewer of the Book, not as much the Writer of the Book.No matter who NY Times picked as a reviewer, the reviewer is responsible for his/her statements, quite apart from what the Writer of the book had to say.Your criticism of Ajami and NY Times is totally misplaced, to sa the least.I’ve read Ajami’s review, and I agree more with his point of view (and that of Caldwell) than yours (which seems baseless and disingenuous).

  • Christopher3

“Today, Muslims in Europe are being demonized the same way Jews were demonized for 7 centuries. Mr. Ajami is a fellow traveller with them.”Only difference is that Jews were not looking to impose a set of barbaric religious laws on Europe, Muslims are.Islam is today’s Nazism.

  • gimpi

In general, I am unimpressed by the quotes from the Qu’ran detaling the problems with Islam. I can find similar quotes regarding women, umbelivers, outsiders et all in the Bible and Torah. However, in general many of the followers of Islam are more violent, less willing to tolerate difference and more oppresive of others than many other faiths. There is also no way around the oppression of women. Women have fewer rights, opportunities and freedoms in traditional Islamic societies. Lots of this is cultural, I understand, but Islam doesn’t seem to change those cultures. I honestly don’t know why any of this is. I’m pretty sure it’s not the religion or holy writ. As I said, other monothestic religions have similar stuff in their writings. And they all have times in their history when most of their followers were every bit as fanatical and violent as the most rabid Islamist. And it’s certianly not the people. We’re all pretty much the same, as humans go. Any ideas that aren’t just a verbal attack? I’m especially interested in what Moslems think of all this. One idea, Islam is a younger religion. Both Christinaty and Judism were both much more violent in the past. Is this possibly “just a phase” that monothestic religions go through in their youth? Will possibly Islam moderate as it ages? (Just a goofy aside, but age is one of the few real difference I see.)

  • rabjitha

In the last 12 hours here are some examples of “good” deeds done by Muslims all over the world; 7 Xtians massacred in Pak, 700 killed in Nigeria after attacks by Muslims, terror plots uncovered in Australia and NC…Islam is associated with intolerance and violence and we read it in papers every day. News are not fiction, Eboo.

  • Maryann261

Most of the world’s most barbaric acts are done in the name of Islam. There is no way this “religion” can be respected. Women are treated worse than animals. Its founder was a pedophile who married and had sex with a 9 year old girl. Islam is heinous. The West is at war with Islam. The West must win this battle no matter how long it takes. Anyone who values her/his freedom and equality will not want to live under sharia law. Sharia law is what the Islamists want to force on the West. The West must use every arsenal it has to defeat Islamists. The defeat of Islamists by the West is as important as the Allied victory in WWII in order for the free world to survive and thrive.

  • roxn

Poor Ebo PatelWhy do Muslims want everyone to consider their religion first – why can’t they just see themselves as people first !!And therein lies the problem! In the Islamic world you have to be Muslim – or else – in Europe and your behaviour and actions are more important. But if you are looking to dominate the world – putting a big sign up saying that you are Muslim – might be more important.

  • Maryann261

Patel is upset that the NY Times gave a fine review to a book about Islam. I have read many books about Islam, and I will read this one too. Bawer is right about appeasing Islam and sacrificing freedom. That is what is actually happening. Any capitulation to Islamists is a blow to the Western way of living. Patel is wrong that Islam has anything to contribute to the West. It is trying to destroy the West. There can be no appeasement of Islam. The only answer to Islam is for the West to wage full scale war against Islamic nations and destroy all of them.

Dear Mr.RKSINGH1987, I think you need to read the history which is real.I suppose you have read some bit of islamic history but unfortunately only between the lines. You better understand the context of all the statements which were made in the Holy Quraan. And about Prophet’s life, what you know is only what present Jewish media is highlighting. This is nothing but falsehood. For you this might be the real history but I am well aware of the truth. If you are a hindu, then check out your false religion which preaches nothing but superstitions.PLease go through good books on Islam to understand what this religion preaches.I dont want to argue with you because my religion does not preach this.My sincere request to you is before you talk about any personality, please look at yourself.Judge if you deserve to talk about such great personalities. The following is from Michael Hart’s book and lists Prophet Muhammad as the most influential man in History. If you have time, read about his biography written by Michael Hart. Thanks, waiting to hear from you soon.

  • Farnaz1Mansouri1

Shan77,You write:”And about Prophet’s life, what you know is only what present Jewish media is highlighting”Be advised, that Fouad Ajami is Muslim. Also, be advised that the Times is owned by Episcopalians, WaPo by Christians, the Wall Street Journal by Christians. The major networks–all are owned by Christians. So…is it now the “Christian media” with which you have a problem? Now, look at the irony of your post. You try to justify your religion by making a patently false racist slur. The result? You reinforce the views of those who see Islam as you wish they would not, and you make those who feel differently question themselves.

  • ccnl1

And where does Islam gets its ideas of world domination?”The followers of Judaism are God’s chosen people” and the “heaven can only be achieved through the RCC” for starters.

  • daniel12

Shan77 says Michael Hart said Mohammed is the most influential man in history. This could very well be the case if we mean by influential the number of people attached to this or that man. Islam is made up of a great number of people–therefore Mohammed is the most influential.–Except that perhaps Christianity is the largest religion. But number of adherents says nothing at all about whether Mohammed was right or wrong or really if he is worth anything at all to the modern age. Most influential says nothing at all about the quality of the man unless by quality we mean the quantity of people following the man. And of course anyone would look askance at a person saying quality is determined by quantity.

zebra4You wrote, “The message of Muhammad indeed was monotheism.”The message from the “god of islam” was that Jesus was merely a prophet and not God-Incarnate, is this not so?Also where Jesus taught us to address God as Father and even as Abba which in English is the equivalent of Dad or Daddy the “god of islam” gets perturbed by this, is this not so also?Whereas Jesus said, “I and the Father are One” and also that Jesus would, “Send the Holy Spirit”, clearly referring to God as Trinitarian, the “god of islam” gets mightly upset when someone refers to God as One and yet a Trinity.Take care, be ready.Sincerely, Thomas Paul Moses Baum. Thank you for the reply, DebChatterjee. However, you aparently missed the “any religion” part of my quote. Other religions have been quite sucessful, I note several in my original post. Here’s another example, the militia movement in the 1990’s in the U.S. did a fine job of using religion, sometimes the violent Christian Identity religion that I mentioned, to tie their followers in knots. Also, the ACLU is not waiting to sue anyone making statements against Islam. Many books have been written, many sermons preached and whole seminars taught on problems with Islam. Remember, you can say pretty much anything about anyone in the U.S. and be fine. Remember, again back in the 1990’s, the “Bill Clinton is a mass murder, Hilary is butch and they’re both druggies” stuff that was circulated. Or, more recently, the “Bush was in on 911, and the Saudi government bought him off,” rumor that ran around. The people spreading these conspiracy notions around look stupid, but they can’t be sued.On a side note, how, exactly, do you see “Obama’s Muslim ancestry will help propagate their cause inside USA and abroad” working? Do you think the groups you named rigged our election? What positions has Obama taken that you think will further their agenda? Talk about a conspiracy. I get that you don’t care for either Muslims or Obama, but that doesn’t mean they have anything to do with one another. I don’t care for either radishes or liver, but they are unrelated.

  • gimpi

“If I were a Muslim who truly care about the Ummah (Nation of Islam) in particular and the world in general I would work toward separating the Mosque from the State, just like so many other enlightened societies around the world are doing. Turkey had done so and Tunis is far along that road.” That seems like a good idea. If nothing else, seperating powers always makes for less oppressive cultures. “Absolute power corrupts absolutly,” or some such idea. Quite a reasonable suggestion. Well done.I might suggest, however, moderating your approch. I have mostly read you as attacking the religion of Islam, quoting parts of their scripures to prove how bad it is, and talking about how dangerous Muslims are. That hardly ever motivates people to take your advice. Try not coming across as an enemy, and you may find it easier to offer suggestions that people will actually consider. And never underestimate the value of offering constructive suggestions in a reasonable way, without name-calling or attack. If people don’t feel they have to defend themselves against you, they are much more open to what you have to say.

  • DebChatterjee

There we go agaion, Eboo…..This is actually Eboo’s rant against anything critical of Islam.Perhaps Eboo is going insane …

Regarding Michael Hart’s comment on Muhammad being the most influentuial man in history, indeed says nothing about Islam in the positive light.Today, like it or not, Osama bin Laden is the most influential man in on the Muslim street. Does that mean Muslim terrorists are actually doing good deeds (aka terrorism), and we the evil infidels view them as bad ?

  • DebChatterjee

Also Eboo, you do come across as religiously biased. Just look at the tailpiece in your post. I quote it here:”Enjoy the last month of summer, and for my Muslim readers, may God give you strength during the blessed and challenging first days of Ramadan”Why only Muslim readers ? Doesn’t other readers read your post ? I am an infidel, kafir and I read your post. So, I don’t deserve God’s blessings ? Will God not give his glad tidings and blessings to other humans (Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Jains…) Why do you single out Muslims for God’s blessings ?

  • gimpi

abhab1, thank you for the response, but I’m afraid you missed my point. Just check out the Old Testament for Christians, or the Torah for Jews. Both are full of tribalism, violence directed at outsiders, and oppression of women. The Christian New Testament has plenty of “I come not to bring peace, but a sword,” moments. The Church of Jesus Christ Christian that I cited is founded on racisim and worship of violence, yet it is undeniably an offshoot of Christianity. To say that Islam has a corner on the market in a holy writ chock-full of extremism is just plain wrong. And plenty of “Islamic” violence has political or economic motives. One trick that people frequently use is to tie frustrations with societal changes, economic fears and loss of political clout into a neat little knot using religion (any religion) as the string. Just look at the “tea-bag” or “birther” movements in the U.S. right now and check out the religious affiliation of most (note-I didn’t say all) of their followers. Also, plenty of Islamic organizations with violent followers have strong IRA-type political agendas. And, as to the “they want to rule us” fears, the U.S. has a small off-shoot of conservative Christianity, called dominationists I believe, that teaches only conservative Christians should hold power, and that they are called to remake first the U.S. and eventually the entire world over into a sort of Geneva-esque conservative Christian theocracy ruled by old-testament law. Shiara anyone? Small pockets of these believers have turned violent. See “The Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord,” a group active in the 1990’s.In no way do I say there doesn’t seem to be problems with many Islamic societies. I said as much in a seperate post. I just don’t claim that I understand the cause, or that the entire group is somehow defective. I’m still interested on how people living in Islamic societies see this. That’s how I expect to learn. What, exactly, do you see as an end-game here? Do you want to wipe the religion of Islam off the map? How do you think that’s even possible? And how would that not be a bigger atrocity than the ones you decry? As long as you can’t see people (including yourself) clearly, as long as you insist on demonizing groups that frighten you, you can’t even see where real problems might be. I would suggest you quit reading the Qu’ran looking for quotes to cherry-pick, take a good long look at the entire world (not just the parts that scare you,) and then in the mirror. You might be surprised at what you see.

  • spidermean2

Many believe that Islam is a false religion but how many Catholics know that their religion is false too.Jesus said “who is my mother ?”. I believe He said that because He knows that in the future, a false church would arise (Catholicism) to venerate Mary more than she deserves. It’s a blasphemy in the eyes of God that he is referred to as someone with a mother. “I am the Alpha and the Omega” and “Who is my mother?” (Jesus Christ)Unless Catholicism changes its mindset, it will have trouble facing God at Judgment Day.

I am more than a little amazed by Eboo Patel’s apparently sudden discovery that Fouad Adjami has both feet firmly planted in the neocon, Heritage Foundation camp. His pervert representation of Islam and/or Muslim societies is in the same category of writings as those of Anthony Shadid of Middle-Eastern/Muslim society politics and socail life, of Roger Cohen’s analysis of Iranian politics and Iranian society. It is not far removed from removed from the analyses of Bill Kristol for that matter. By contrast, one in a while, journalistic profesionalism DOES compel editors to include aspects of objective reporting. In that category, I find the piece published by the NYT in its photojournalism essay on Iran in the link below superbly sober, objective, and enlightening. I lived one full year in Iran from August 1978 to August 1979, the year of the Revolution, to know what I am talking about.

Fouad Ajamy has been attacking Islam and Muslim for the past 30 years, as a Shiite Muslim, any mention of greatness of Islam and Muslim around the world is a problem for him. He is a closet Khomeinist; as an Ajamy (of Persian decent) he will always feel for his brothers and attack where he grew up and the culture that raised him. He is a Neocon, but he is a con man as well; he has been conning them for a while now.

Gimpi asks:“What, exactly, do you see as an end-game here? Do you want to wipe the religion of Islam off the map? How do you think that’s even possible? And how would that not be a bigger atrocity than the ones you decry?”I personally do not call for the eradication of Islam. It is ex-Muslims who know much more about Islam than me and who are calling for its demise. Listening to them I get the impression hat this religion shall crumble soon under the weight of its internal and external contradictions and its flagrant inappropriateness in solving modern day challenges. They allege that the ten countries with the highest rates of illiteracy, poverty and corruption are Muslim majority countries.

GIMPI wrote:”And plenty of “Islamic” violence has political or economic motives. One trick that people frequently use is to tie frustrations with societal changes, economic fears and loss of political clout into a neat little knot using religion (any religion) as the string.”This is possible very legally in Islam. Yes, people in other “religions” have tried the same trick Muslims play; but so far have been largely unsuccessful. Their (other religions) success rests on how much bargain/advantage Muslims can derive by playing this religion card in a multi-ethnic society. In France, the banning of headscarves for Muslim women produced a backlash by the Sikhs who also protested the ban on turbans. However the French goverment stood firm and the bans haved still not been lifted despite opposition from the world leaders and community. In USA everybody tries to be distinct and show others how that distinctness can be used to gain political advantage. For Muslims it is Islam; Islam is basically a predatory religion that outright condemns all other religions. Who is Islam to heap racist verbiage on someone who is a non-Muslim ? If in the Age of Obama someone from the non-Muslim stock condemns Islam or opposes it, s/he is quickly labelled as a racist and the ACLU/CAIR/AMC lawyers smile with glee because they have a case to fight and milk dollars. However, if a Muslim rants against other religions, s/he can get by taking umbrage under the racist passages from the Quran by saying that it is what Islam says.So much for equality and brotherhood, and exercise of the First Amendmnent, huh ? In particular election of Obama to the US Presidency is a major weapon because the ACLU/AMC/CAIR thinks that Obama’s Muslim ancestry will help propagate their cause inside USA and abroad. Wow ! What a gameplan !

EbooIt is true that the Spanish Caliphate brought a measure of enlightenment to the continent. Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in relative harmony until the Pope decided to ride in and destroy everyone and everything. It is indeed true that the Spanish Caliphate brought a long period of peace and prosperity to Spain under it’s rule.So what happened? Why are all modern Islamists attacking from holes in the dirt like rabid dogs to kill and maim innocents? What happened to the enlightened Caliphate? What happened is that any religion — a simple, moral ideal and a fiction — can only exist in any sort of semi-rational form for a limited time before it’s very tenets are largely forgotten and/or misunderstood and/or awkwardly morphed into something perhaps palatable to more modern times. It is then rebirthed, as both modern Christianity and Islam have been, by revisionist fundamentalists touting a twisted, often violent form of the original.Religion in its death throes. You were partly accurate in your fable of Islamic Spain, but you jumped right over why Islam, in it’s present form, is a thousand times less enlightened and tolerant than it was 500 years ago..

GIMPI:I believe that failure of the Bush-Cheney policy on Iraq, American loss of lives in Iraq, Afgnanistan with the resulting bad image in the Arab-Muslim world, and, Obama’s leftist (read humanitarian) views (follower of Saul D. Alinsky) with his Muslim ancestry – though he is not a Muslim, all certainly contributed to his rise. The elections were rigged ? I just am perplexed what made you think that I am implying such nonsense ? The ACLU and AMC+CAIR certainly contributed to and capitalized on this phenomenon. People were frustrated at Bush-Cheney. Their frustrations are not misdirected/misguided. But, because people were frustrated, angry and disillusioned, it does not mean that candidate Obama’s election to US Presidency is a panacea to all ills and evils in USA. This reminds me of Iran’s situation. Dethroning Reza Shah Pahlevi, and ushering the age of Islamic Revolution led by the fanatic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini did not do any good. The recent elections in Iran are a testament to what has happened. I could be wrong, but Obama’s election to the pinnacle of power could have the same effects(desired/undesired). In fact Obama has now angered his leftist base because he is finding that he cannot just simply undo whatever Bush had done. He is finding with much distress that whatever Bush had done were all not wrong and immoral. The Guantanamo Bay fiasco is an example. The economy was down not because of Bush but because of subprime lending and derivative trading, plus American’s bad spending habits. The American earned, say $50, and spent $100 by borrowing and making a pile of debt that s/he could not pay. Auto industries – are incompetent and Japanese autos in USA are beating the hell out of the US car manafacturers. So comes the stimulus. Bush was WRONG when he went to Iraq just practically at his own whim. In an already sagging economy he piled up debt by spending money in an unwinnable war. That’s the only problem he had. Otherwise I cannot see what he did else was so bad. His “leftist” successor (Obama) is not overturning each and every policy of Bush. This shows that even to a leftist these policies make some sense, and Obama cannot find a better alternative.Americans are indulgent, and thought that the prosperity is here for eternity. Well, that is foolish, and, now when the bubble burst, they are quick to blame all on Bush. Wow !

DebChatterjee,Thank you for your thoughtful response, I aplolgize for not responding sooner, my work schedule is a bit erratic right now. Deadlines every other minute, that kind of thing. I also apologize if I misread your first response. I still don’t see the ACLU link, however. The ACLU certainly was no friend of the Bush administration, but that had nothing to do with Iraq. His anti-terrorism agenda stood to play fast-and-loose with the bill of rights, and that is what they defend, at all costs. Remember, they aren’t “leftist” (whatever that may mean to anyone.) They defended the second-amendment gun-rights of public-housing residents and the rights of Nazi groups to march. They simply defend the bill of rights. I do agree with you that Obama’s election won’t fix everything that’s gone wrong since Bush’s Iraq policy went south. My only hope (and why I voted for him) is to stop the bleeding, and hope we can heal. I feel the U.S., as a nation, needs to change course, and he seemed more likely to try to do that.

DebChatterjee , We have been sold an advertising-style bill of goods, that we can have everything we want, with no cost. Polititians in both parites sold us this, because it won them elections. Our bad for believing it. Personally, I favor a more european-style tax-to-services ratio, but I can see the argument for a more libertarian one. The main point is we need to have several serious conversations on these topics without name-calling or attacks. That’s the only hope we have to fix any of this.I don’t, however see any connection between Obama’s muslim ancestory and his election. I may have misread your first post, but I went back, and it still lookes like you somehow feel his election was advanced in some way by “Islamists.” If that was not your intent, my bad.I feel, if anything, it was a problem for him. Remember the “Obama-Oasma” slip a reporter made, and Obama’s fatalistic “I’m used to it,” response. Remember that wild-eyed woman at the McCain rally with her “I don’t trust him, he’s a Muslim,” rant that McCain shut down? That’s the basis for my belief his heritage didn’t help him at all.It may, however, help him communicate with the middle-east, and that’s all to the good. I, personally have had it with shoot-em-up cowboy diplomacy. The the world isn’t “just another American town,” and someone who has lived in other cultures and respects other religions, is of value. Don’t you agree? As to “leftists” being disapointed in him, every president faces people becoming disenchanted as he can’t accomplish everything he (and you) want. This “lefitst” had no such unrealistic expectations.

  • DebChatterjee

Walter-in-Falls-Church wrote:” i too am sometimes “angered” when things …”Well, that ain’t gonna happen at all, if Obama (I did not vote for him, and shall not vote for Democrats in 2012) has any practical sense. Campaign promises are rhetorics and sends waves of pleasant feelings through people. But, pragmatics is what keeps the same person, dulled by euphoria, survivinng. However, Islam is what this blog is all about and we should not drift in our discussions/barbs. Do you think Islam and 1st Amendment are mutually opposite, and Islam (as we know it) has no place in USA ?

DebChatterjee, you asked, well, that’s two questions. re: 1st amendment: islam gives some lip service to “freedom of religion”, but that’s more than outweighed by all the “slay idolaters” parts. sophisticated (read “enlightened”) muslims do know how to leave idolators alone. it takes a LOT of interpretive effort to twist islam into being tolerant of other religions (ask ukba), but it’s possible.re: islam in america: of course there’s a place for islam in america, but it can’t be the “islamic country” kind where “no law may be enacted which contradicts the undisputed laws of islam” (per iraq’s constutution for example). my BIG problem with islam is that it began as a system of religion AND government. it oversteps its bounds into the realm of politics. that was “fine” (not really, but that’s how things were) in the dark ages, but not so much now.i think islam is by far the “worst” of the popular religions in the world. it is anti-women, anti-science, anti-everything-not islamic….
