Everyone knows the old cliché when it comes to video games – too much focus on violence. But that’s exactly why in 2013 Kingdom Games began looking at an unlikely marriage between the Old Testament heroes and video games. Why not create a new class of epic games that draw the audience into the world and lives of these timeless heroes?
As we explored the text, the account of King David like an epic video game script. But how do we re-tell David’s amazing life story? The best perspective for drawing the audience and player into the narrative that spanned multiple books in the bible seemed to be through the eyes of his closest allies and protectors, David’s Mighty Men. Abishai (1 Sam 26), Benaiah (2 Sam 23), Eleazar (2 Sam 23), Jashobeam (1 Chron 11), and Shammah (2 Sam 23) quickly materialize as five of David’s most trusted followers. These are the FIVE: Guardians of David (FIVE).
Son of Zeruiah, and brother to Joab and Ariella, Abishai commands one-third of Israel’s army and is best known for accompanying David on a late night visit to a slumbering King Saul.
Shining moment in 1 Samuel 26:8-9 Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time. And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’S anointed, and be guiltless?
In FIVE: Guardians of David, players are invited to control Abishai using his bow and arrow to liberate the throne from Saul.
Son of Jehoiada, commander over David’s Cherethite and Pelethite armies, Benaiah protects the King, executes his laws, and dispenses justice.
Shining moment in 2 Samuel 23:20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lion-like men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:
A massive two-handed hammer sets Benaiah apart from any of the other FIVE heroes. He can smash the ground and send a tremor through the earth, dealing immense damage to his enemies.
Son of Dodai, Eleazar stands his ground and decimates Philistine battle camps in service to King David.
Shining moment in 2 Samuel 23:10 He [Eleazar] arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him.
Adorned in red, Eleazar can effectively wield both a sword and shield in combat. His shield isn’t just for defense as he can both bash and bull rush his enemies.
Son of Zabdiel, pledges his spear in allegiance to King David. He defeats hundreds and commands thousands.
Shining moment in 1 Chronicles 11:11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred.
There is none in David’s army like Jashobeam. With his spear held high, Jashobeam defends the innocent and champions the cry to unite the region.
Son of Agee, Shammah, has a gift for using his sling to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Shining moment in 2 Samuel 23:11-12 And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines. But Shammah stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the Lord wrought a great victory.
Shammah deftly uses a sling and stones as an homage to the King and defend the city ramparts from impending ruin.
