Sarah R = "Seems to be inspired by Psalms 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.2     He makes me lie down in green pastures,he leads me beside quiet waters,3     he refreshes my soul.He guides me along the right paths    for his name’s sake.4 Even though I walk    through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil,    for you are with me;your rod and your staff,    they comfort me.5 You prepare a table before me    in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil;    my cup overflows.6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me    all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord    forever."
Shawn Bose = "Here is a nice video of Father Barron talking about his discovery of Thomas Merton. "
gary gach = "How I pray is to breathe. -- MertonI copied this prayer in my hand out of devotion to its humble wisdom.Like his New Seeds of Contemplation, i hear this prayer echoing the Cloud of Unknowing ... “ I have no idea ... “ “I cannot know ... “ “nor do I really know for certain ... etc. The book it’s from, Thoughts in Solitude is one of my favorites of his. Thank you for the inspiring colloquial video of Fr Barron, Shawn -- and for the link to the provocative article, Sarah.  Yes, he’s iconoclastic and not without controversy, And his sense of respect of each other across religious distances pertains here.  I’m aware of the Vatican’s distancing from him -- and certain interpretations of Vatican II -- under Pope Benedict. Certainly Vatican II -- which made Merton possible -- came during an era in which the effects of the pill, abortion, free love, drugs, the war, civil rights marches and riots, the Third World movement, etc. etc. all contributed to a general feeling of upheaval and radical" change. For me, however, seminal was Vatican II’s equating all religions as manifestations of Godhead and thus worthy of our attention.  That enabled me, personally, as a Jew to find a bridge to Catholicism. In that sense of interfaith, I include some links to a few recent online sources on Br Merton & Buddhism, which happens to be my own path; worthy too of course are his writings on Judaism, Tao, Sufism, etc.Dr Bonnie Thurston : I Woke Up (an hour’s overview of Merton’s reception of Buddhism )Deschamps (Powell) : the synergy between Christianity & Buddhism Sister Ocean on Merton, non-self, & surrender  And the blog Thomas Merton & the Quest is worth a digital pilgrimage  Blessings be."
Cary W = "This prayer is pure encouragement to all faithful hearts, for we do not know much about anything....for every ten bits of information we are aware of, there is actually 10 million bits of information we are not aware of, nor could we ever be, at least in our normal consciousness.  The desire to seek Him, know Him and bring Him glory in all our activities and experiences is about all we have in certainty.  The rest is up to Him."
Sarah R = "Proverbs 3:5,6Trust in the Lord with all your heart    and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him,    and he will make your paths straight."
