### Acts 10:44-48 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

1 Sarah R = "That is, Jewish believers. The disciples and most of the early church, and Jesus Himself really, were Jewish. Jesus is the Jewish Messiah prophesied about in the OT, the Jewish Hebrew Scriptures, but the salvation He offers is open to all."
2 Sarah R = "The early church was surprised by this because some of them thought that Jesus had only come for them - the Jews. The Jewish people had been entrusted with God's Word and revelation in order to be a "light unto the Gentiles" (Gen 49:10; Is 42:6; 45:22; 49:6; Lk 2:32; Acts 13:47), in other words, a light to the world. Instead being "God's people" left them feeling privileged and rather than reaching out to their neighbors, their traditions isolated them from others and caused them to judge their "unclean" and "sinner" neighbors.Sounds like some churches today....Jesus turned this upside down. See "Jesus, Friend of Sinners.""
3 Sarah R = "Interesting that these people were baptized in the Holy Spirit before water baptism. Some who hold water baptism as essential to faith argue that that the Holy Spirit comes onto people through water baptism but here we see something different. Others believe that water baptism is a public declaration of deciding to follow Jesus, whereas the baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit comes upon the placing one's faith in Jesus."
