2 Shawn Bose = "The reason Pope Francis's title is "Pontifex" is that this has been the name for the chief Priest of Rome  - even predating Christianity.  For example, Julius Caesar was Pontifex Maximus of Rome in his time. Pontifex means "bridge builder" which is a wonderful metaphor for what a religious leader like Francis aims to be."
