“If God is, his existence and what he is like do not really depend on what anyone thinks of him.” -          Paul E. Little, Know What You Believe, page 35 It is not uncommon to hear someone say, “The God of the Old Testament is a God of wrath, but the God of the New Testament is a God of love.” This is a misconception bred out of a misunderstanding of God’s Word. It is an incomplete picture – missing the love and compassion of God in the Old Testament and the judgment of God in the New. The Old and New Testament are beautifully woven together and carry one central message – God’s progressive revelation of Himself to humanity in order to bring us back into a right relationship with Him. James 1:17 says that God does not change (see also Malachi 3:6). He is and was and will be always the same one true God. Listed below are attributes of God that we discover in reading the Bible. We can find parallel attributes of God in the Old and New Testaments. Also included are words by and about Jesus, God incarnate come down to Earth, to show how He also exhibited and promoted these characteristics of God that we see continually throughout the Bible. God is… 1.       _Creator_ (OT) Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (NT) Colossians 1:16 “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.” (Jesus) John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” 2.       _Eternal_ (OT) Deuteronomy 33:27a “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” (OT) Habakkuk 1:12a “Lord, are you not from everlasting?  My God, my Holy One, you will never die.” (NT) Revelations 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Jesus) John 17:5 “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” 3.       _Holy _ (OT) Exodus 15:11 “Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you – majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?” (OT) Isaiah 6:3 “And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." (NT) Revelations 4:8b “Day and night they never stop saying: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” (Jesus) Hebrews 7:24, 26 “But because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood… Such a high priest meets our needs – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens." 4.       _One_ (OT) Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” (NT) 1 Corinthians 1:4b “We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one.” (Jesus) John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.” 5.       Personal (OT) Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (OT) Exodus 33:11a “The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.” (NT) Acts 17:27 “God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.” (Jesus) John 14:9b “He who has seen me has seen the Father.” 6.       _Omnipotent_ (OT) Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” (NT) Ephesians 1:18-19 “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,” (Jesus) Matthew 19:26 “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 7.       _Omnipresent_ (OT) Psalms 139:7-10 “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me; your right hand will hold me fast.” (NT) Colossians 1:17 “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Jesus) Matthew 6:6 “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” 8.       _Omniscient_ (OT) Psalms 139:1-4 “Oh LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you know it completely, O LORD.” (NT) Hebrews 4:13 “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Jesus) John 2:25 “[Jesus] did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.” 9.       _Love_ (OT) Jeremiah 31:3 “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.” (NT) 1 John 4:10 “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (Jesus) John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whosoever should believe in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” 10.   _Merciful_ (OT) Deuteronomy 4:31 “For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.” (NT) Ephesians 2:4-5 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” (NT) Titus 3:4 “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy” (Jesus) Matthew 5:7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.” 11.   _Compassionate_ (OT) Psalms 103:8 “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” (NT) James 5:11b “The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” (Jesus) Matthew 9:36 “When [Jesus] saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” 12.   _Just_ (OT) Deuteronomy 32:4 “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” (NT) 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (Jesus) Acts 17:31 “For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.” 13.   _Righteous_ (OT) Psalms 145:17 “The LORD is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made.” (NT) Romans 3:5-6 “But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?” (Jesus) Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” 14.   _True_ (OT) Psalms 119:160 “All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.” (NT) Romans 3:4 “Let God be true, and every man a liar.” (Jesus) John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” 15.   _Judge_ (OT) Psalms 9:8 “He will judge the world in righteousness; he will govern the peoples with justice.” (OT) Isaiah 66:16 “For with fire and with his sword the LORD will execute judgment upon all men, and many will be those slain by the LORD.” (NT) James 4:12a “There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy.” (Jesus) Matthew 12:36 “But I tell you that men will have to give an account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken.” 16.   _Near_ (OT) Psalms 145:18 “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (NT) James 4:8 “Draw close to God and He will draw close to you.” (Jesus) Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
